Recording

Went into Negative Space studio Saturday night with our good friend John D (above). A weird experience for me (in that Hess, Nate and Chuck weren't there) -- but still awesome to be recording Right Idea songs again.

I feel like we've grown, taken a step back, and got super-awesome all at the same time. . . in this "next chapter" that is this group of 4 new tracks.

The songs ripped in practice, I can't wait to hear 'em all finished!

The Gang's All Here

Thanks again to EVERYONE who came out yesterday for back-ups for the new record. Here's a little pic from the day courtesy of Jeff Grey. Partly visible are 3 members of Right Idea and about a dozen of our closest friends. Not pictured are the other 10 or so crammed into Negative Space studio in Cleveland, Ohio!

Thanks so much for lending us your throats for shout-outs, sing alongs, and good times.

Once we have some samples to pass along we will!

Here's to everyone who has the Right Idea in 2010!

John Delzoppo

The man pictured here is John Delzoppo. But this man is not John Delzoppo. This man named John Delzoppo has been wiki-ed. Here is what the public has to say about John Delzoppo. But we do not recognize what the public says about John Delzoppo. That man is not the John Delzoppo we know and love. He is not the man Right Idea are in the process of recording a follow-up 7" to the Our World LP with right now at Negative Space Studios. John Delzoppo is an entirely different man. He has a beard (sometimes). And a piccolo drum snare he let us borrow once.

This is what the real John Delzoppo looks like, and this is what he does:
Poseurs be damned.

Thanks to Rye for the photo.

“OUR WORLD” UPDATE

From Aram at React!

Could this release be cursed? It seems that way after 2 sets of rejected test presses, two different masers [sic] being made, huge plant delays, and screwed up covers… BUT I finally got the 3rd set of test presses [in] the mail today and I’m happy to say that they sound great! So, now that I’ve given the plant the go ahead we can expect a two to three week turn around for the vinyl as long as there are no further disasters, and while this record has been delayed by almost two months I’m happy to say that the end is in sight!

Unfortunately this means that orders will not be going out until around the 1st week of September and I really apologize for the wait. I’ve never had so many issues with a release and I definitely feel bad to keep you all waiting but trust me when I say that once you get your package you’ll be stoked… little extras are being put in and some other cool things are in the works to make each package worth the wait.

All merch orders have been waiting on the vinyl, again sorry about that but we have to do them all at once to avoid the massive confusion of mixed up or missed orders- we’re working on a new system for the next release so just hold tight!

Thanks again for your time and patience!

So there you have it -- September sometime! There's something else I'm waiting on about the same time, so I'm super stoked! Keep an eye out for more info as it comes up. . .

Tonight we're in the studio again with John D and tomorrow we're back in the van! See you at Youngblood Fest, you jerks! If you're coming with, be ready early.

This is a time we'll remember!

Suma this, Suma that.

Jeff and I got the pleasure of watching our vinyl being cut/ etched / whatever-the-fucked last night at Suma Studios in Painesville. If you can imagine the most beautiful place you can think of that can still come off as really creepy -- then you can imagine Suma Studios. Less than 5 minutes from the highway, and a stone's throw from the Grand River, Suma looks a lot like an old Elk's lodge or a run down ski chateau. Minus the dudes on little cars and the fezzes. Well, at least minus the little cars.

The place looks like it is straight out of a 50's sci-fi or horror epic, complete with homemade computers and Nitris Oxide canisters at the ready (at least they're a Coke family):
As archaic as it all looked, Paul was the man with the ear (and the eye -- he was able to describe the drum mic set up just from the grooves that were cut in the lacquer -- crazy), ensuring us we were in good hands for the mastering and cutting of the masters for plating.

Jeff was stoked (and also drinking a Cherry Coke):
The actual factual lathe:

We're a 1/4 of the way there now, just waiting on plating, then tests, then PRE-ORDERS, then viola!

Grand Funk, Black Keys and RIGHT IDEA

The Our World record (on React! Records -- tentative release date: May 28, 2008)is getting mastered and plated by Paul Hamann at Suma Studios on Cleveland's east side. Paul and his father Ken are best known for being behind the knobs of some epic releases by Pere Ubu, Grand Funk Railroad, Ben Folds Five, and most recently, the Black Keys' Attack and Release.

If you want to get a good idea of how Suma looks -- check out this "live in studio" (is that a contradiction in terms or what?) video from the Black Keys:

Fucking-a right?

Our World

Hey everyone!

Here's a snippet from a new song, titled "Our World." It's one of the songs from our upcoming React! Records release, due out early this summer!

We're stoked, and can't wait to get the rest out there, but here's this for now:

Here's the lyrics (straight from the mind grapes of Jeff Hess):

Our World

Made a pledge to ourselves to better our lives
Our goals are set and they're getting in our sights
"Educating a world" that doesn't seem to care
But we'll continue, with heads held high, reach beyond the blank stares

I know we won't fail if we work together
Changing the course of this world forever
Working together -- man help man
It's our plan -- together!

Change the World!

Change the world! Change it! Reshape it to a better place!
Where people look beyond religion and race!
Reach out your hand -- join in our fight!
Showing each other what we feel is right.
It starts with just one to take a step forward.
Soon others will follow -- just make your voice heard!

Change the World!

All created equal, and continue to remain.
Get so caught up in the differences, we can only look to ourselves for the blame.
It starts with our own lives, and the way we live!
Setting examples -- showing others how to give.

Let's turn this around, the world is ours!
Never stop reaching for the stars!

Change the World!
Forever!

Listen! Learn! Go!

Negative Space Studio, Day 3

We finally put most of the nails in the coffin (so-to-speak) on our latest recording(s). You've seen the posts in the past about it, but I can't reiterate enough how stoked we are on all the new songs. There's a whole helluva lot of 'thank-you's owed out, and we'll get through them one-by-one in the best way we can: canned laughter and quiet jabs. So if you would be so kind: follow the links, say hello to our friends, and do your best to reach out so that next time you too can sardine yourself into the backup closet.

And the awards go to(in no particular order):

Best Performance in a Supporting Role: Casey Kulas (aka: Casey Committed; Clevo Casey; CK1)
Best Usage of a Perfect Stranger's Mobile: XSlabaX
Best Performance of "Put-up-with-douche-bags-in my-home": John D.
Lamest Excuse for Being Late to Gang Vocals: Mike Carlson
Most Dudes crammed into a car: Nick Hope This Helps
Best Display of Patience from a Label Dude: Aram React!
Oddest Usage of Unintelligible Language: Alex WK
Most Obvious Omission: Nate For Graves
Best Concealment of a Scowl in a Posi Situation: Ed Sound and Fury
Most Confused: Sean "I still don't understand what you guys are going for here" Clarke
Most Consistent Reppin' of RIGHT IDEA gear: Chuck Right

And an extra special thanks to Pat Mad Minds, who said it was an honor "Just to have been Nominated." (And no, I don't hate you.)

I'd like to thank the Academy . . .

Negative Space Has Never Been So Posi

We spent the better part of the last 2 days in the studio with super-engineer John Delzappo (whom you may know from his righteous duo Clan of the Cave Bear), pounding out jams for an as-yet-to-be-announced release . . . Things went pretty much as we planned: AWESOME!

We can't wait to finish up vocals and the final mix in the next week or so (depending on ours and John's availabilities).

Here's a snap shot of Chuck Right, laying down some Craig Ahead-worthy righteous jams:

And here's a "complete" list of new songs we laid down:

  1. Alert
  2. Clean Break
  3. Clear Your Head
  4. You Sink
  5. That's Not You
  6. Our World
  7. Searching For Meaning

This brings our song count up to 12, which more than betters a couple projects I've been apart of in the past. Now don't forget all these titles are considered Works In Progress until you see em on vinyl or plastic, yo -- and there may be a super secret cover (or 2) to be leaked out as time moves on . . . But don't hold us to anything!

Pics from the Let Down show will be posted shortly . . . Thanks so much again to Jeff Gray for fighting through the mortar fire to snap a few . . .
